The California Quail, also known as the California Valley Quail or Valley Quail, is a highly sociable bird that often gathers in small flocks known as 'Coveys'. In winter these coveys will number up to 200 birds. They will stay in these coveys until they pair off during the mating season. The California Quail have a curving crest or 'plume', made of six feathers, that droops forward - black in males and brown for females. It is not uncommon for these 'plumes' to be matted together to give the appearance of only one or two feathers.

I REALLY enjoyed painting this pair of Valley Quail. The way that they are all Puffed Up sitting in the Snow, Quietly, Together. What else could you Title the painting except 'Quiet Romance'? I have witnessed Eagles, Hawks, Turkeys, numerous Backyard Birds and Mammals, come through my neighborhood, but nothing makes me jump to my feet faster than seeing a whole Covey of Baby Quail scurrying by. They look like Little Walnuts with Revolving Legs!
